Day 21 - 22: Wroclaw, Poland

Arrived in Wroclaw, Poland. Got the key to our apartment and we're excited  on a number of fronts. We were right in the middle of things so we could walk to nearly everything. We had an apartment so we could do some washing, a kitchen so we could cook so plain food...veggies...AND there were 2 channels with movies in English at night time....a bonus when you have hardly heard English for a few weeks.
Headed out to Market Square in the morning...about a 200 metre walk. Apparently this is the largest market Square in Europe...and it was pretty big. Walked past the amazing Town Hall to get there. As you panned around the square there were the most amazingly colours buildings with a variety of adornments. Really pretty.
We continued on to look at Plac Solny, which were/are residences that had ornate sculptures on the facades. Onwards to St Elisabeth's church where we climbed the 300 steps (in a spiral stone staircase about 2 metres across) to take in the view. And, it was a great view. Though BR (and. Myself if I am honest) were a little comfortable up there. They say that Wroclaw is the town of fountains and churches; and they are not wrong. Next stop was Mary Magdalene Church...the one in the photos with the bridge. Had read that the bridge up top is a little wonky, so we didn't venture up this one. Made our way over to a few cute bridges...one with a large number of locks all over it expressing undying love and we arrived at Ostrow Tumski...or Cathedral Island. A lovely walk and we reached the cathedral. These guys know how to do it, there was a lift to the top of the tower...albeit a very old rickety thing that groaned all the way to the top. Stopped with a jolt and the man operating the lift smiled at my reaction. Again very high up and great views. A circle around and a very snaps and we were ready to enter the rickety lift and return...crash...back to ground level.
The day ended with BR and I shopping at the supermarket...working our what to have for dinner.
The following day was more relaxed, a leisurely breakfast and we purchased a tram ticket from the booth...getting good at this...and made our way to Centennial Hall and the "amazing" Wroclaw Fountain....every hour it puts on a water display to classical music. We waited and watched. It was goodish...but the Belaggio in Las Vegas is a lot better. Maybe this one is better at night. Whilst we were at Centennial Hall we looked at 2 exhibitions to expand our artistic knowledge. The first was a collection of...well...weird stuff. Two stood out. The first was a Starbucks takeaway cup full of black resin. I interrupted this to mean that their coffee tastes yucky...the second was 5 donuts joined with a big skewer and then placed on a rotating old school turntable...still trying to work out the significance. Thankfully the second exhibition was a lot better. It was a photographic display of some of Milton Greene's photos of Marlene Dietrich and Marlyn Monroe..from the Black sitting range. Really good. Final stop today was at the Raclawice Panorama...which is a monumental 15 x 114 meter cyloamic painting. It depicts a famous battle and it truly was massive. It encircles a whole large building, made especially to house it. A commentary takes you around the painting. Very good...and unusual.

A note about dinner: decided not to cook tonight so went out to the square. I had croquettes and a mixed salad and BR had pork with potatoes and cabbage. The funny thing was the only choice for vegetables was cabbage...BUT you could choose the type: fried, boiled, sautéed, with bacon, with onion, red, green etc.
off to Gdansk, Poland tomorrow...on the Baltic Sea.

Have spent 2 days in this lovely town. Having an apartment is great...washing done,
