Day 58: Veliko Turnovo..Tsarevets

To break up our drive to Varna we decided to visit the the Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Turnovo. We had to park a little way away and faced the long walk up the hill.  The walk went surprisingly quickly. Grabbed a couple of tickets for the fortress and decided to have a coffee before going up. Must say that this little cafe was spotlessly clean and the owners were clearly proud of their establishment. They recommended a local chocolate style cake which BR and I shared. They were keen to know what we thought of it and when I said it was delicious, he proudly said I told you so'. Nourished we began the walk. It was very reminiscent of the Great Wall of China as we walked along to the entrance. Ruins, old walls, towers and the famous patriarchal church of the Ascension. We walked around for a couple of hours.mthe site was massive and was perched majestically on the top of a hill. We walked back to the car and the lady who had let us park at the church carpark suggested we see the The church of the “Holy 40 Martyrs” which  is one of the most famous churches in Bulgaria. We got tickets and walked around under the bridge. Small but old it housed the graves/tombs of many. The church inside was simple, but a small domed room at the end was beautiful. The same lady asked what we thought and she struck up a chat with BR whilst I took a few photos.mshe even offered to call another church that was shut and have it opened if we wanted to blew it. Sadly, we were pushed for time and had to decline.
