Day 78: Plitvice Lakes National Park

After a night in a nice Pensione (Guesthouse Korita) and a good hearty meal at the local equivalent of a pub)......we were ready for the next National Park. Being in the middle of nowhere really we went back to the same 'pub' for brekkie and attempted to feast on 3 eggs (always 3 over here...not 2) and ham with fresh bread. Got to the lakes with the thousands of other people, purchased our all inclusive ticket (it's one fee all up and includes ferry access etc in the park) and planned which route/walk to take. The man at the info centre suggested we really should do the 8km circuit to get a lovely view of all the lakes and waterfalls. We said it would take between 4-5 hours. Decided we could do this...I was feeling pretty ambitious so we set off. From the moment you start the walk to the end you are confronted with glorious waterfalls and magnificent green lakes. The water is crystal clear. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consisted of 16 terraced lakes. The first few lakes were very busy and at times you got stuck in a long line. But, we had all day as our final destination of the day, Zagreb, was only a a couple of hours away. We strolled around and paused to just take in the beauty on many an occasion. The walk itself was fairly easy and for a small section you take a ferry to continue the walk. There were less people doing the longer walk so the crowds thinned out in places, which was nice. Overall, this was a truly wonderful place that should be included on any Croatian itinerary. When we completed the walk we enjoyed an ice cream and caught the complimentary and very convenient bus back to our carpark. As a note, I am going to say, rather self indulgently, that I am so stoked about my knee. The 8 kms was not a stretch and there were steps and hills that did not pose any problems.
