Day 78-81: Zagreb...Croatia

After leaving the glorious Plitvice Lakes and feeling invigorated, and a little tired, from our walk, we drove on to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. We stayed a little out of town...20 minutes on the tram. Arrived in town on our first day here and got off at Ban Jalecic Square. There are lots of cafes and shops that line the square and the big sculpture of Count Jalecic has pride of place. There was also a food and wine festival happening, so we ventured in. BR very taken with the anchovies...tasting a few of them and drooling. Walked up to Zagreb Cathedral which was pretty impressive. What was also interesting here was that the old clock stopped at the time of a big  earthquake which caused significant damage. It has never been reset so it's time still makes the event. Wandered the streets and came across St Marks's Square, with the very simple yet beautiful St Mark's Church. Couldn't go in so we admired from the outside. Although all white, the roof was beautiful with coloured tiles. The whole square was white, so this really stood out. Close my was the Museum of Broken Relationships. Intrigued we ventured in. A very unusual museum which showcased stories of break ups....some very funny.....some very sad....some very creepy. There were momentos and stories attached to them. It was quite hot by now so stopped in a small park for a beverage...beer of course. Feeling refreshed and a little cooler we continued our explorations. The markets were fun, lots of produce no flowers. Zagreb has a large number of museums. Most are housed in buildings that are worth seeing just for the architecture. Headed back home after a day of walking. Discovered a nice little local restaurant down the road. Enjoyed cepapi and salad. Very delicious. In fact we ate there a couple more times....even offered complimentary dessert on our last night. Decided to spend the next day looking at visiting museums. Sadly, I not feeling well so caught the tram home and BR enjoyed a solo Arno visiting art galleries and the famous Museum of Naive Art. BR very impressed. As is the case in many cities we have been to, there are casinos on every corner....though they are more like our pokies I think with slot machines. No idea how busy they are as they all look just a little bit seedy. Heading to Bratislava next, on our way to Vienna.
