After leaving Vienna, on the way to Hallstatt we decided to call in to Melk Abbey. Melk Abbey (German: Stift Melk) was originally a palace, and as such it's buildings are very grand. It is also located on the bank of the Danube River. Melk Abbey is a baroque building built in 1702. The monastic community of Melk is over 900 years old and black-robed Benedictine monks still stroll amidst the marble sculptures and frescoed walls. Although many say that the Abbey Church is the highlight of the abbey...and it is magnificent with all the gold, marble and frescoes etc, but for me, the 2 story library was beyond anything I had ever seen and looked like it had come from a Harry Potter set. There are over 80,00 volumes of priceless works. It was was believable. The gardens were also lovely as we took a short stroll around. Melk Abbey sits overlooking a beautiful little town. It's a shame we didn't have longer to explore the town.
